Damian von Stauffenberg is the founder and CEO of MicroRate, a rating agency for microfinance institutions. Before taking up the cause of commercial microfinance, Mr. von Stauffenberg worked for 25 years in the World Bank and its private sector affiliate, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), where he occupied a number of leadership positions and gained extensive experience in corporate finance and investment management. He was a board member at various financial enterprises, including Development Finance, Ltd. (Trinidad) with over $100MM in assets. For three years, Mr. von Stauffenberg was the Lecturer on Finance at the World Bank’s Economic Development Institute.
Currently, in addition to heading MicroRate, he is President of Seed Capital Development Fund (SCDF); Chairman of the Investment Committee of Profund, a fund specializing in equity investments in Latin American microfinance institutions; and member of the Executive Committee of the Latin-American Challenge Investment Fund (LA-CIF), a microfinance debt fund.
Through MicroRate, SCDF, Profund, LA-CIF and various corporate boards, Mr. von Stauffenberg promotes commercial funding for microfinance institutions and is one of the world’s most respected microfinance experts. His ultimate aim is to make microfinance services available to the largest possible number of poor people in developing countries.
